Wells were very important to those who used them, and it is not so unusual to see this much attention given to decoration. This is a generally satisfactory urban space - the scale is not too large and the buildings are well arranged. Notice that the space works well even though the buildings on the left are quite ordinary. Of course, the presence of the large church on the right does help.
