Brugge, Grote Markt

This is a huge market square in a town that is not all that large. I wonder if it was ever fully utilized on market days.

The tower in the center does not suffer from quite the giantism that it appears to - it is a trick of rectilinear perspective in wide-angle lenses that elements near the edge of the frame are exaggerated in size. Still, this is a truly mammoth tower, and the top section really lacks any artistry. I can scarcely imagine what holds it all up - the soils in this part of the world are mush.

Brugge (Bruges), by the way, is a town that no visitor to northern Europe should overlook, and it is conveniently close to Ghent, another noteworthy town.
