Berlin, Postdamer Brucke

This square really does not function as a square - it is more a tramway than a square.

We have seen misguided efforts in the USA to replicate scenes like this and fob them off as "carfree." While there are no cars, the presence of dozens of diesel buses is even worse than the horde of trams seen here. Many of these outdoor bus stations have been modified since their inception and are no longer carfree. In truth, they never were.

The photograph shows why I favor the construction of metros in large cities - if trams are relied upon for all transport, their number increases to unacceptable levels. While it is true that this provides frequent service, the noise and danger come to have serious adverse effects on the street, as here.
