Rome, Piazza San Pietro

This is the square in front of what is known to English speakers as St. Peter's, perhaps the most important sectarian public space in the world. It is much larger than this view shows, and it is built with a rigid, formal symmetry. When the Pope speaks, it is often entirely filled with people.

Everything here shouts "wealth and power."
