Nancy, Porte Stanislas

This gate has three portals, a rather common arrangement. Pedestrians use the low, narrow passages, while all vehicles pass through the larger opening.

Notice that this gate is entirely ceremonial - it has no doors and so cannot be closed, circumstance that typifies gates built after city walls ceased to be vital defensive works.

Notice how the few overhead wires for the tram mar the integrity of this scene. The effects of wires and other clutter are a matter we will return to repeatedly. So often in modern society we have accepted this kind of defilement without a second thought. It's time to think again - beauty matters!
