Milan, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele

This may be the best-known of all the European galleries. It is built on the same scale as streets in the neighborhood and really only differs from them by the glass roof above.

This particular gallery, situated right in the heart of Milan, has mammoth portals at the entrances, and these are highly ornamented and visible from a considerable distance.

Wind issues require careful consideration in any construction of this sort - does it blow hard enough to negate some or most of the shelter? Further consideration must be given to the question of venting summer heat and protection against hail storms. The engineering questions are formidable and require careful attention.
