Rome, Chiostro di San Paolo

This is a tour-de-force. Notice the thin double columns and the variation in the column design. This appears actually to be an arcade surrounding a large interior courtyard. Its purpose is doubtless to serve as an external circulation space for the adjoining building. This arrangement can work well anywhere the winter weather is not too cold.

One key difference between this arcade and the others we have seen is that there is a raised base at sitting height. What a pleasant place to sit for a while.
